Six best user-friendly CMS

If you want to start your own online store, you’re probably wondering how you can add a shopping cart on your website and reliable, secure payment integration. The first step you should take is checking which CMS works best for you. How it often happens for eCommerce solutions, there are many options available but, depending on your needs and the size of your business, some might serve your purposes better than others. If you are a small company that is just starting selling online, for example, you want to avoid paying for a CMS that is too expensive and complicated. You probably need one which requires little technical expertise and offers you basic, still great functions for a fair price to help you develop sales and customer portfolio without giving you a headache.

But what is CMS?

CSM stands for Content System Management. This term includes all platforms that allow businesses to manage a variety of tasks and content, among which the possibility for your customers to purchase directly from your website.

First of all, it is important to remember that CSM doesn’t only allow you to display items and collect payments, but it also helps you create and organise content, which is still a big part of marketing and eCommerce. To sell, you need to describe products, show your knowledge in the sector and implement great customer service. In other words, when selecting such tools, you should also take into account what they can do to help you provide a good marketing experience to your customers, because content will support buyer’s decisions.

So, the second important consideration is: do you need a content-first CMS or a eCommerce-first CMS?

The best CMS for content

WordPress.com: it is definitely the most popular CMS for website creation and content publishing, in fact it serves around 35% of websites worldwide. It was originally created for blogs but now it is widely and successfully used for all kinds of websites and online stores. It gives you flexibility and the chance to sell your products/services, it doesn’t require a great deal of technical skills and you can count on a large troubleshooting community. However, you will have to set your own domain. It is easy to confuse WordPress.com with WordPress.org, which is open source.

Wix: very simple to use, because it works through a drag-and-drop interface, so you can easily build your own website from scratch. It is ideal for content creation, but it can also be used for selling, at least to start with. You should know though that once you’ve chosen a layout, you can’t switch to another one, so it lacks flexibility. Moreover,  Wix only accepts payments from Paypal and Authorize.net.

Joomla: with plenty of themes and features, Joomla has evolved a lot over the years and, like WordPress.org, is open-source. You can run an online store through it because it has many extensions. However, it is a bit complex and sometimes requires more advanced expertise, which is probably why it is very popular among developers.

The best CMS for eCommerce

Shopify: it is one of the most popular all-in-one eCommerce platforms and it allows you to easily set up an online shop. It is ideal for small businesses because it is very simple to use, and you don’t even have to pay for hosting. It does require a fee though for transactions which use payment providers outside of Shopify.

Magento is a very powerful eCommerce platform. It has an open-source version that you can use for free, with basic functions but still good enough to open an online shop. You can integrate Magento Open Source further, by adding extra features, or switch to Magento Commerce, which is however very expensive and is thought for large businesses.

BigCommerce: it can be slightly more expensive than other platforms, but the benefits you get in return are worth the monthly fee. Big Commerce is a leader in its field, because it allows you to start small, but it is ready to escalate your growth by providing new options as you get bigger. It’s an all-in-one platform, very simple to use and it accepts many forms of payments.
